Ross Park Mall’s History
Ross Park Mall opened on August 15, 1986, with original anchors Kaufmann’s, Sears, and JCPenney. A planned Gimbels location never opened after that chain was sold and liquidated, leaving Horne’s to eventually take the space. Federated Department Stores acquired Horne’s in 1994, rebranding it Lazarus and then Macy’s by 2005, while Kaufmann’s converted to Macy’s in 2006 after Federated also acquired May Department Stores.
The mall’s biggest transformation came in 2008, when Nordstrom opened in a newly built anchor space alongside a 65,000-square-foot lifestyle wing featuring Crate & Barrel and Pittsburgh’s first L.L.Bean store. That expansion also brought in luxury retailers like Tiffany & Co., Burberry, and Louis Vuitton, repositioning Ross Park from a standard regional mall into one of Pittsburgh’s premier shopping destinations. Sears closed in April 2018 as part of a nationwide restructuring, with the space later becoming Dick’s House of Sport.
Getting to Ross Park Mall
The mall sits off McKnight Road near I-279 in the North Hills of Pittsburgh, directly serving Ross Township, McCandless, and Cranberry Township. Its location makes it the primary indoor shopping destination for Pittsburgh’s northern suburbs.
Tips for Visiting Ross Park Mall
Start in the Lifestyle Wing for Luxury Brands
The 2008 expansion concentrated Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany & Co. in one section near Nordstrom. Beginning here saves time if luxury shopping is the priority.
Try California Pizza Kitchen for a Regional First
This was Western Pennsylvania’s first location of the chain. It’s worth a stop if you haven’t visited one before.
Check Dick’s House of Sport for Extras
This expanded-format store includes features beyond a typical sporting goods shop, like batting cages and a climbing wall in some locations. It’s worth extra browsing time compared to a standard anchor.
Visit Weekday Mornings for a Quieter Trip
Weekend afternoons, especially near the food court and Nordstrom, tend to draw the heaviest crowds.
